We recently ran a duo of events focused on how innovation can help drive collaboration and increase cost efficiencies within transportation infrastructure supply chains.  The first day was focused on ‘Systems, Tools and Applications’, with the second focusing on ‘Delivering Better Data’.

Joining us on the virtual stage were a mix of people from organisations representing transportation asset owners, builders, knowledge facilitators and academia. Including HS2, KTN, LM-JV, CDBB, UCL and 1Spatial.

We heard how innovations such as 1Data Gateway, Geocortex and FME are being deployed into HS2 and its supply chain to support the creation of Digital Twins through validation, integration and visualisation of both spatial and non-spatial data.  Interesting updates on other innovations currently being developed through HS2’s Accelerator, and wider in the UK AEC market through the i3P programme generated an informative debate.

The subsequent panel discussions stimulated discussions around the prerequisites needed for the development of Digital Twins, and the implicit reliance on, and importance, of good quality and well-integrated data and more esoteric issues about what ‘fit for purpose’ data means.

Two common themes emerged from across the two days, both from within the individual presentations, and from the panel discussions.  In summary, the general consensus agreed that to derive better outcomes in Transportation Asset Infrastructure Build and Operations supply chains, data should be both fit for the purpose that it is needed for, and be suitably integrated with other data, through a ‘system of systems’ approach.

Personally, I found great pleasure in hearing the different stories from our presenters, and in helping to Chair the events. You can review all of the presentations from both days here.

I look forward to our Smarter Data Smarter World event, where once again we’ll welcome industry leaders to discuss the challenges that they are facing in the Transportation sector, and the data led solutions they are deploying to make the world a safer, more sustainable and smarter place for us to live.
