On-Demand Webinar: FME World Tour Australia 2020: Firwoodmaps

While FME is not widely used for creating visual outputs, FME proves to be more than efficient in creating outstanding spatial visualisations, adhering to the concept of minimal cartography.

The concept of minimal cartography follows traditional cartographic rules but also opens the door for modern spatial visualisations. Originating in graphic design, this concept emphasizes the artistic part of cartography while providing simple yet effective ways to present spatial data.

Minimal art often makes use of basic colour theory, simple forms and an emphasis on typography.

Following the minimalistic concept, FME can match or even overcome the capabilities of traditional GIS tools for creating outstanding visual outputs. This proves to be especially useful when working with large datasets where FME can be fully utilised as the go-to software for both data manipulation and visualisation.

Over the past year I have spent some time experimenting with FME Home edition to push the boundaries for creating visuals in FME. Adopting the minimalistic approach to cartography I managed to utilize FME to produce attractive maps.

During my presentation I would like to showcase a number of maps I have created fully in FME using the above approach i.e:

While presenting the above maps I will highlight the crucial steps in FME and the utilisation of transformers to achieve captivating visual outputs. In particular:

  • Mapnik Rasterizer
  • PDF Styler & PDF Layouter
  • GIF Creator
  • Heatmap generation in FME

I would also like to share tips with fellow FME users on the significance of color choice, typography use and detail handling in FME workflows.

Hear how Jan is using FME on a daily basis for routine data conversions and for building automated scenarios.
