FME World Tour Australia 2020: Department of Transport - Automation in FME (My job was boring, so I automated it)

SPIDRE is a geocortex mapping portal that provides current and historical survey and land information along the arterial road network in Victoria. Data is sourced from CAD data, plans and various databases.

The team had various issues including outdated, clunky scripts, a lack of staff resources and data that could take a month to end up in the production environment. I ended up using FME to replace all our legacy scripts and created nightly, automated processes that updated the portal.

Furthermore I replaced an ArcMap toolbox with FME to partially automate the extraction of CAD data into GIS data. I also ended up replacing ArcMap with geocortex customized forms and editing tools as part of our production environment, so users sign into the mapping portal, and see the data they create against the most up to date information. Over time, I replaced more and more of what users had to enter into the forms with data extracted using FME, to improve efficiency and reduce user error.

Originally I was hired to create basic GIS data and enter information, now I let FME do my work for me.
