Having an up-to-the-minute schematic view of the network (water, sewer, gas, electricity, communications or any other type) – with the latest data, available as GIS data layers, PDFs or on paper – should be fast, seamless and cost-effective.

Yet, for many businesses, the simplified schematics required by maintenance crews, planners or emergency response teams are an after-thought. Often, they are created (expensively) by hand and updated infrequently.

Problems can arise when those schematics are needed in a hurry. Often, they are out-of-date resulting in slower response to emergencies or even a safety risk to workers and people in the affected area.

Demand for up-to-date, simplified, but accurate, representations of networks is growing.

As organisations move to more mobile – and often outsourced – workforces, they need to preserve local network knowledge. Access to up-to-date schematic maps makes these teams more effective more quickly.

Accurate schematics that show network structure and connectivity at-a-glance support more effective maintenance programmes, faster emergency responses and can help with regulatory compliance.

However, because schematics have traditionally been created by local teams, or by different companies that have since merged, there is often no consistency. This makes it harder for staff to work across different regions of the network.

Many firms have taken the approach of “double-digitising” networks, but updating the schematics that are derived from the live network information is often forgotten or delayed, sometimes by years.

This leads to out-of-date schematics and to engineers updating their local copies by hand. Again, inconsistency becomes a problem.

Create accurate schematics on demand

Our automated, rules-based approach is different.

Using our 1Integrate rules engine, we enable you to automatically generate a schematised model of your real-world asset data whenever you wish, usually overnight or after every change to the underlying data.

The schematised data can be sent back to your existing mapping solution or output directly, in whatever form you need: paper, PDF or data layers for the mobile GIS of a tablet device. Another use for the output is to provide accurate connectivity information in a form required by network simulation and analysis tools, removing the effort required for transferring the latest asset information into these systems.

Our solution combines advanced, machine-learning, techniques such as simulated annealing with intelligent, context-aware, user-defined rules to create a set of simplified, schematic data according to your needs.

The process automatically performs standard simplification tasks such as straightening the network, separating linear and point assets (such as moving valves away from junctions) and exaggerating the lengths of dead-ends. This means that when the schematic is viewed at the expected scale, asset symbols do not overlap and the network connectivity is clear to see.

Accurate connectivity is maintained throughout, ensuring that the real state of the network is correct and clearly visible, even when spacing is exaggerated. Important details, such as which side of a road a pipeline runs, are maintained.

Labels are generated intelligently and placed in empty space. Labels can be selectively filtered so that, for example, a single label is generated for a contiguous series of short pipes, if they share the same material and diameter.

Insets showing specific areas of interest can be automatically generated and placed around the schematic.

The process can be used to generate schematics at any ‘scale’ and deal with output that show an entire network as well as the connectivity within an individual asset such as a substation or treatment works.

Because different rules can be used to create different schematics, then it is possible to create multiple levels of schematic that can then be shown at specific scale ranges within a digital display, depending on the users’ zoom levels.
