Take a break with Andrej Mocicka, Country Manager at 1Spatial Australia

Tell us about yourself?

I have been in the Spatial industry since 1979. Starting at Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology (RMIT) in Surveying, to my current role as Country Manager at 1Spatial here in Australia.

After completing the first year of the Certificate of Technology course in Surveying at RMIT, I landed a job as a Chain BOY at the Melbourne and Metropolitan Board of Works (MMBW).

I worked at the Board for 11 years, working full time and studying part-time. Obtained my Degree in Surveying after going back to university full time in 1985 and 1986. I got married in the middle of the full-time study to my wonderful wife Karen and we have three great adult children, Kurt, Aiden and Elise.

I returned to the Board until 1991 when I went to work for TOPCON Australia. This is where my sales career started.  I was there for 5 years and then went to a company called LISTECH where I stayed for 8 years.  In 2003 I decided to try my hand at being a handyman…(something I had always wanted to do ), but 4 years later the call of the Spatial Industry was too strong and I went back to LISTECH.  I was there for another 12 years and then joined 1Spatial as the Sales Manager for Australia in July 2018. I am now the proud Country Manager for 1Spatial Australia PTY Ltd.

Fun fact about you?

I have been to over 40 countries around the world, filled up two passports completely and have visited too many cities for both work and play to bother counting.

What do you enjoy most about working at 1Spatial?

The people and the technology.  The 1Spatial team in Australia and around the world are welcoming and always ready to help.  The technology was what attracted me to join back in 2018 and I have not regretted the move.

What are your favourite geospatial products/technologies and why?

This is a bit of an interesting question and one that I have two answers based on the favourite products within and external to 1Spatial. For the external product, one being FME, as it is a big part of our Australian business. For the internal 1Spatial product I would have to say 1Integrate.

When I was first asked if I was interested in joining 1Spatial, I asked… “what does 1Spatial do?” I was told about the technology and how you can set up rules to validate data and automatically correct it to ensure reliable and accurate data. This resonated with me, having spent over 30 years in the spatial industry dealing with data that was in polite terms… garbage!

What’s the most interesting solution problem or data challenge you’ve tackled?

Every customer's challenge is interesting to me and each time a customer contacts us I enjoy the challenge of figuring out the best solution, so I am going to have to be diplomatic and say that there is no most interesting… they are all interesting…

What makes 1Spatial a great place to work?

I have already outlined that the people and the technology are what I enjoy most about 1Spatial and they are the very reasons that 1Spatial is a great place to work.  1Spatial is a very flexible place to work which is something I appreciate. The recent COVID pandemic has shown that 1Spatial is a leader in looking after its staff and ensuring everyone’s well-being. I believe our corporate goals of making the world more sustainable, safer and smarter for the future, makes 1Spatial a great place to work.

If you were given an airline ticket to go anywhere in the world where would you go and why?

I would have to say I would like it to be an around the world ticket so that I could visit two places that are on my bucket list.  Iceland and Machu Picchu.
