David Eagle is our FME Division Manager, based in the UK. He has worked for 1Spatial for over 7 years and is a passionate product specialist for the FME technology platform. The makers of FME, Safe Software, launched their certification program back in 2007 and David was one of the first people globally to be recognised as a Certified FME Professional and Certified FME Trainer.

Fun fact about you?

Trawling through my Google timeline recently; try it some time, it is decidedly unnerving! I discovered that I’ve spent more time at several certain well-known chains of hotel in the pursuit of delivering FME training and consultancy, than I have visiting my parents. Though I’m not entirely surprised, given that in the last 3 months alone I’ve delivered 35 days of formal Certified FME training. What perhaps is a little more unnerving is the fact that Google also seems to think I spend more time in a specific brand of DIY store, than I do visiting my parents. Perhaps Google is trying to tell me something, or my Mum has hacked my Android device… either way, perhaps I ought to visit my parents this weekend.

What is your favourite FME transformer and why?

Tough one. Seriously, I have to pick? Alright, but I’m having three. Back in the day it was the WorkspaceRunner, that little guy saved my bacon against a tight deadline more than once - so quickly hit the top of my favourites list. More recently though, everyone loves an API, so it has to be the HTTPCaller. Need a tool to unlock any data at the end of any web service? Well then, the HTTPCaller is your friend. For fun though, it has to be the PhotoCoordinateExtractor, it never fails to light the fire of excitement at the possibilities FME can offer, when introducing FME’s capabilities to a new customer.

What is your favourite thing about working for 1Spatial?

The breadth of our customer base and variety of engagement. In the morning I can be discussing vehicle tracking, dabbling with 3D building models by lunchtime, managing schools and education data by mid-afternoon and pushing housing and street furniture information into a cloud hosted database by the end of the day… and that’s just on Monday!

What’s the most interesting data challenge that you’ve tackled?

I was once asked to demonstrate to a customer how to connect to a web service. When asked if I could connect to their Wi-Fi, they said no. That was quite a challenge!

How long have you been working with FME?

Approaching half the time I’ve been on the planet, which is a scary thought. No, I’m not telling you how long that is. Yes, Google probably knows.

What do you love about FME?

Well, I love data actually and FME allows me ‘no holds barred’ access to as much data as I can get my hands on. If it’s out there, the majority of the time FME can read it and do something amazing with it, with a little sprinkle of skill and a soupcon of imagination.

If you were given an airline ticket to go anywhere in the world where would you go and why?

A warm, uninhabited island. As I’m arriving by plane, I guess I’d be happy to exit by parachute with some basic supplies strapped to my back. I have a desire to go at it all “Bear Grylls” style, getting back to nature for a while… would I survive? I’m not entirely sure, but I’d love to have a go.

Dave Eagle has also just been re-accredited as a Certified FME Trainer, this new accreditation will allow Dave to continue training for another 3 years.
