Moving the Dial Towards Gender Parity in STEM
At 1Spatial, we believe in the power of diversity and inclusion to drive innovation and success. Being a female-led organisation, we understand the important role women in STEM play and why we support WISE’s (Women into Science and Engineering) drive to achieve 30% representation of women in STEM roles by 2030.
National Women in Science and Engineering Day
This year, we proudly celebrate the inaugural National Women in Science and Engineering Day on January 17, 2025, dedicated to honouring the achievements of women and allies in STEM.
We encourage other organisations to join us in our commitment to gender parity in STEM. By creating supportive environments, offering growth opportunities, and celebrating the achievements of women in STEM, we can collectively move the dial towards a more equitable future.
How to move the dial
At 1Spatial we see some key areas where organisations can help drive more women into STEM roles and organisations.
- Provide strong role models with women in key leadership positions
- Fostering an inclusive culture that supports work-life balance
- Encouraging education and upskilling
- Celebrating women’s successes
1) Provide strong role models with women in key leadership positions
Claire’s Vision: Leading with Passion and Empathy
Claire Milverton, our CEO, began her career in finance qualifying as a Chartered Certified Accountant in her early twenties, managing audits and mentoring new graduates. Following a pivotal role at PwC, she advanced to become Group Financial Controller and later CFO of the company that was eventually acquired 1Spatial plc – a company listed on the UK Stock Exchange. Though not a traditional path into STEM, Claire’s journey has proven to be remarkably successful.
Her transition from CFO to CEO was fuelled by a passion for the GIS industry and its potential to drive meaningful change through technology. Under her leadership, 1Spatial shifted focus and introduced innovative products such as 1Data Gateway and 1Streetworks. Claire’s forward-thinking vision embraces a future with increasingly complex and collaborative geospatial data, underscoring the importance of robust data foundations and AI-driven tools.
Claire attributes much of her success to maintaining a healthy work-life balance and a strong support network, which has enabled her to excel as both a dedicated mother and a dynamic CEO. Her efforts and influence were recognised when she received the Geospatial Leader of the Year 2024 award by the Geospatial World Forum, a testament to her transformative impact on the GIS industry.
Driven by strength, determination, and expertise, Claire continues to pave the way for innovation and progress, inspiring others to lead with passion and empathy.
Sheila’s journey: From Sales to CEO
As CEO for 1Spatial Inc. (Americas), Sheila brings over 30 years of geospatial industry experience, including 23 years at Esri Inc., where she advanced from technical sales to Regional Manager and later managed the Federal Sciences Sales team. She supported international efforts, including Latin American distributors and global geospatial events. Sheila is passionate about implementing 1Spatial capabilities across the Americas, recognising the value of 1Integrate in ensuring data systems are “fit for purpose” and enabling data managers to work more efficiently and effectively.
2. An inclusive culture
1Spatial fosters an inclusive culture by implementing multiple supportive measures for its female employees, well all employees in fact! We offer flexible working hours, allowing staff to balance their professional and personal lives more effectively. Additionally, we provide enhanced maternity leave, ensuring that new mothers have the time and support they need during this critical period. The company also conducts training on menopause and fertility awareness, promoting a better understanding of these important health topics and creating a more empathetic and supportive work environment. These initiatives collectively contribute to a workplace where all employees feel valued and supported.
3. Developing for a brighter future
A key area supporting women in technology roles is through our comprehensive graduate program. This graduate program is designed to attract and nurture young female talent, providing them with the skills and experience needed to excel in the tech industry. The yearly personal development allowance we offer all employees empowers women to pursue further education, attend conferences, and participate in training courses, enabling them to stay current with industry trends and advance their careers. These initiatives not only help women build a strong foundation in technology but also ensure they have continuous opportunities for growth and development, fostering a more diverse and inclusive tech workforce.
4. Celebrating Women at 1Spatial
Over the past year, we have run a campaign spotlighting the incredible women who work across our global teams at 1Spatial. Each month, we’ve highlighted their contributions and key roles, showcasing the amazing work they do. We are proud to celebrate these women who drive our success and inspire others to pursue careers in STEM. See below a snippet of information from our amazing women:
