Five Reasons to Move to FME Flow
Why 2026 is the right time to reassess FME Flow
Article written by Ian Fletcher, FME Expert at 1Spatial
2026 is already shaping to be a significant year for Safe Software and the wider FME community. We have already seen the release of FME 2026.1, part of a new structured quarterly release cycle that provides organisations with greater clarity around the product lifecycle and upgrade planning. Combined with a series of important recent announcements, here are five key reasons that make this spring an excellent time to reassess the benefits that FME Flow can bring to your organisation.
1) No Code Web Applications
In an increasingly hectic modern world, where data managers are expected to deliver more insight from their data with increasingly limited time and resources, FME Flow enables staff to build their own no-code web applications. Whether enabling self-service data-download capabilities, providing upload interfaces with built-in data validation systems, or connecting to broader automation workflows, users can develop secure and efficient web applications without requiring deep expertise in application development.
2) Real-time data processing and enterprise integrations
As organisations wrestle with continually increasing volumes of information arriving 24/7, the ability to respond efficiently and in a timely way has become essential for maintaining operational efficiency and relevance. FME Flow automations enable workflows to be triggered the moment data arrives, whether through monitored email inboxes, cloud‑hosted folders, enterprise systems, or via external webhooks. In addition, FME Flow supports a range of data‑streaming technologies, allowing it to ingest and process live data feeds in real time from external sources and internal systems. This enables use cases such as monitoring sensor outputs, updating dashboards with live information, and orchestrating downstream processes based on real-time streaming events.
3) Data Virtualisation
For teams looking to share data between systems, or to explore the potential of AI‑driven workflows, whilst ensuring data sovereignty and security, Data Virtualisation is a key tool to consider. FME Flow makes it possible to create secure, Open API-compliant API’s whilst giving you control over the flow of your data between internal applications, or externally as part of a secure client-facing data-sharing mechanism and all without the need for additional back-end software. This approach ensures that you maintain full control over the structure, security, and governance of your data, while also enabling automated data sharing, and controlled interactions with Agentic AI services.

4) Flexible Deployment Options
FME Flow offers a broad range of deployment options designed to meet the diverse needs of modern enterprises. Whether installed on premises or on the cloud, or a hybrid approach between the two, FME Flow can be deployed wherever you need it to suit your specifications. Installation can be installed directly to your cloud environment via Azure, Snowflake or AWS marketplace, or customised through Kubernetes or Docker deployments. For teams seeking a reduced administrative burden, FME Flow Hosted also provides a ready‑to‑use, fully managed environment available with only a few clicks of a mouse.
5) New in 2026! FME Flow as an MCP server
Looking ahead, Safe Software will be further extending FME Flow’s capabilities with new support for MCP (Model Context Protocol) hosting. In FME Form 2026.1, we saw the first phase of this, with the release of the MCPCaller transformer, allowing your workspaces to interact with external MCP hosts. Aligned with the company’s “Any AI” strategy, this new upcoming functionality will enable organisations to use FME Flow as the MCP host itself, providing a secure interface between their chosen AI agent and internal enterprise systems. By offering a configurable and standards‑driven method for AI connectivity, FME Flow positions organisations to take advantage of emerging AI capabilities while maintaining robust security and operational control.
There is so much more to come
The changes that have already been announced this year suggest that Safe is investing heavily in new features for FME Flow to maintain their reputation as the “All data, any AI platform” of choice and there will be more improvements announced in upcoming quarterly releases. As with all new features in the FME platform, we expect to see these delivered at no extra cost, as part of your existing license agreements.
