Customers need to start thinking now about migrating their current Geocortex Essentials estate to the VertiGIS Studio Suite of products. In most cases, customers can use the new software without purchasing any new software.

The migration needed is due to Esri’s planned retirement of the JavaScript 3.x Api on 1st July 2024. The announcement, which is dated 27th Feb 2023, can be found here. VertiGIS have responded with the following comments here
If you do nothing, then your HTML5 viewers will eventually stop working.

When considering migration, there are several factors to take into account, these include:

  • Do you require an Esri Portal or ArcGIS Online named user licence?
  • Do you have any bespoke code that you have developed?
  • How many Essentials Workflows do you have and how complex are they?
  • How many Essentials Print templates do you have and how complex are they?
  • How many Essentials Report templates do you have and how complex are they?
  • How many Essentials Sites do you have and how complex are they?
  • Do you need to take any training in the VertiGIS Studio Product Suite?

Do you require an Esri Portal or ArcGIS Online named user licence?

VertiGIS Studio products require an Esri Portal and an Esri named user for each user that will be using the Apps. Your Esri distributor will be able to ensure that you have the correct licences for what you need.

Do you have any bespoke code that you have developed?

Any code that you have specifically developed to work with Geocortex Essentials will need to be reworked for VertiGIS Studio Web. However, before you embark on this, consideration should be taken as to whether this could be achieved with out-of-the-box (OOTB) functionality or with a VertiGIS Studio Workflow.

How many Essentials Workflows do you have and how complex are they?

Geocortex Essentials Workflows will need to be re-written into VertiGIS Studio Workflows. This can seem like a daunting task but can be worked through in a methodical manner. To begin with, you should estimate how complex each workflow is. A straightforward way to do this would be to use T-Shirt sizing e.g. small, medium, and large (small would be1 day or less, medium is 2–4 days and large would-be 5+ days). Armed with this information, you can then try to understand how long a small, medium, and large workflow might take to convert.

How many Essentials Print templates do you have and how complex are they?

Geocortex Essentials Print templates will need to be re-written into VertiGIS Studio Print templates. As with Workflows, this can seem like a daunting task, but can be worked through in a methodical manner. To begin with you should estimate how complex each print template is. Again, an easy way to do this would be to use T-Shirt sizing measurements.

Armed with this information, you can then try to understand how long a small, medium, and large print template might take to convert.

How many Essentials Report templates do you have and how complex are they?

Geocortex Essentials Report templates will need to be re-written into VertiGIS Studio Report templates. As with Workflows and Print templates, this can seem complicated, but can be worked through in a methodical manner. To begin with you should estimate how complex each report template is and follow the same principles as outlined above.

Armed with this information you can then try to understand how long a small, medium, and large report template might take to convert.

How many Essentials Sites do you have and how complex are they?

Existing Essentials Sites will need to be migrated to VertiGIS Studio Web. If viewers are for field use, then you might want to consider migrating the site to VertiGIS Studio Mobile

VertiGIS Studio Web/Mobile works differently to Essentials. VertiGIS Studio Web/Mobile is the viewer and author all in one. VertiGIS Studio Web and Mobile consumes web maps from your ESRI Portal (or ArcGIS Online). There are 2 ways of achieving this: you can create the web map from scratch in your Esri Portal (or ArcGIS Online). ArcGIS Pro can be used to set up all the styles and colours as required. Alternatively, you can export your HTML5 viewer to your Portal and then setup any other labelling, pop-ups, etc that you require.

Pre-designed templates that you can select and use to configure your application will be included with VertiGIS Web/Mobile. You are also able to configure layouts such as KPI (Key Performance Indicators) Dashboards in VertiGIS Studio Web, making it an immensely powerful tool.

Do you need to take any training in the VertiGIS Studio Suite of Products?

The VertiGIS Product Suite is quite different to Geocortex Essentials. 1Spatial would recommend taking basic training courses to familiarise yourself with the new products. If you would like to take training in any of the VertiGIS Studio products, 1Spatial can offer instructor led courses as well as online self-paced training. The courses are 1-2 days in length.

1Spatial can offer help with any of the above including:

  • Auditing your current system to help understand the amount of work that will be required.
  • Bespoke training customised to your specific needs.
  • Consultancy days to help with the migration process.
