Petra Fernandez - Graduate Spatial Data Consultant

Hi, I'm Petra.

I joined 1Spatial in January 2021 and the remote working experience was made extremely easy by the friendly and informative induction process allowing me to get a better understanding of the company as well as an opportunity to get acquainted with the team and members of the wider company as well as its processes.

Since being trained on the company's 1Integrate software it has been an exciting experience working on projects using the skills I learned during training and being able to apply them on live projects. Project work that I have done so far includes writing data rules for two large government organisations using 1Spatial's 1Integrate software which was used to validate spatial and non-spatial data. I also supported another project in configuring our 1DataGateway application enabling end users to have self-service access to our data validation solution. Currently I'm working as part of a team delivering a large utility data management, primarily using 1Integrate and PostgreSQL database.

The company has provided many opportunities for training and further developing skills using software e.g., FME Desktop. This combined with focused meetings with line management discussing personal development and setting goals has created a professional and a well-rounded learning environment serving to enhance my skill set as well as creating an encouraging workplace (albeit initially remotely!). Further to this the teams fortnightly retrospective meetings allows for opportunities to share knowledge between the team members as well as gain insight into the projects being worked on by other members of the team.

My time working for 1Spatial so far has been fun with the various opportunities I’ve had on projects to use and further develop skills I learned at university, whether it be from using PostgreSQL or Microsoft SQL Server as well as QGIS. Such experiences have further allowed me to widen my professional knowledge about working with geospatial data in industry through the various opportunities provided by the company which has helped to develop my knowledge and skills.
